The Great Falling Away From Christian Media

ll Brumbaugh had barely left the network when we suddenly lost 3 other hosts. I didn't know it at the time, but the evidence now plainly indicates that the departures were all related. It started with Pastor Butch Paugh who decided he wanted to broadcast with the Genesis Communications Network because Ted Anderson had offered him free airtime. Butch was paying for his time at Christian Media, and even though Butch had been told repeatedly the story of how Genesis had built their network on theft and fraud, he decided the financial lure was too enticing to pass up.

Furthermore, Pastor Butch had previously vowed that he would never again associate himself with Dave Frantz due to WGTG's previous infractions, but even that didn't stop the West Virginia pastor from going back on his word. Within a week of Butch Paugh's departure from Christian Media, pastor David Lankford also left in order to - you guessed it - be affiliated with Genesis. The very next day Steve Quayle resigned from the network during his broadcast. Clearly, something very strange was going on.

The entire network schedule unraveled rather suddenly and we ultimately lost a total of 7 hosts on the network. What I did not know at the time was that we had a traitor in our midst in the form of a host named Chris Blodgett. Chris was one of the daily hosts based here in Oregon and he was also the board operator on staff with Christian Media during the day shift at the network. Through a series of carefully whispered malicious slanders, Chris spread a number of lies concerning Christian Media in general and my wife and myself in particular. This manipulation seems to have been carefully calculated to benefit Chris and his wife Sharon.

While this work does not allow a lengthy examination of what happened with Chris Blodgett, as the focus here is on Bill Brumbaugh, it is covered in detail, HERE. The short version is that the lies that were being secretly spread by Blodgett had reached Bill Brumbaugh. This was the perfect justification for Bill to refuse to honor his financial commitments. Indeed, we didn't know it at the time, but it is now clear that the slander that Chris Blodgett had been spreading to key parties in the shortwave `community' had also extended to Steve Quayle, David Lankford, and Pastor Butch Paugh. The unsubstantiated slanders that originated with Blodgett had made their way to Bill Brumbaugh

As previously stated, Pastor Butch Paugh had been offered free satellite and shortwave time by the head of Genesis. Even though he had repeatedly vowed that he would have nothing to do with WWFV/WWRB (formerly WGTG) due to the erratic behaviour of the owner Dave Frantz, Butch chose the way of Mammon over keeping his word.

In an apparent effort to validate what he knew to be a spiritual compromise, Pastor Paugh corresponded with Pastor David Lankford concerning me, and both agreed in writing that I have "a root of bitterness." (4)  As a holder of an IRS sanctioned 501(c)3 non-profit permit, it appears that Lankford was stinging from my repeated denunciations of the same. Lankford had publicly concealed this state sanction, while defending his actions quietly behind the scenes. The two critical letters (one from Paugh to Lankford, and one from Lankford responding back to Paugh) were later published by Butch Paugh in a punitive fashion to place me in a negative light.

It is evident that each of these individuals knew that because I am militantly combative concerning matters of integrity (or the lack of the same in the case of Bill Brumbaugh), they sensed that the moral and ethical breeches that were associated with their departure from the network would likely compel me to denounce their present courses. Presumably this helped to motivate them to attack Christian Media in an almost pre-emptive fashion.

What I did not learn until much later was that there was another party manipulating information behind the scenes. That individual was the so-called "Bible Code" expert "professor" Tom Mack. He is also detailed on this website, so look for the cmediaresearch.com file on the "professor."

As that file states, after Chris Blodgett began carefully slandering myself and others at the network, "professor" Mack responded with a 'me, too' type of program and claimed that the "Bible Codes" proved that I am in league with Lucifer!

This was not made public until it was first publicly hinted at in December 2001. Some chronological deductions demonstrate this slimy gossip began as early as the 3rd quarter of 2000 (considerably earlier), yet not one of these "Christian" radio hosts spoke to me about these charges. The slanders were whispered by Chris Blodgett to Steve Quayle. Quayle brought it to Brumbaugh and apparently Lankford.

Apparently Blodgett was also directly in touch with Butch Paugh, and we have direct evidence that Paugh was also told that I was in some sort of sinful behavior. As it turned out, Bill Brumbaugh has a repetitive pattern of not honoring his financial encumbrances, and his regular routine is to look for some excuse to refuse to honor his financial commitments.

Because Bill Brumbaugh has a close association with Steve Quayle, his internet newsletters provided is with documentation as to what actually occurred when the many hosts collectively severed their relationships with Christian Media. As previously noted, Bill Brumbaugh was released from Christian Media in December 2000 due to non-payment of his promised airtime fees.

The first week of January 2001, Steve Quayle announced he was leaving the network. As previously stated, Quayle announced he was leaving the day after Pastor Lankford gave us 24 hours notice that he was leaving the net. Steve's last broadcast with CMN was on January 12th, 2001. It is obvious these moves were connected due to how closely together they all occurred.

3 days later, Steve Quayle guested on Lankford's program on Genesis and announced his new show. Suddenly, each of the former Christian Media hosts, with the exception of Chris Blodgett, were all on Genesis. While each talk show host has the freedom to choose whom they affiliate their programs with, they don't have the right to attempt to sabotage what they consider to be a competitor through slander, disinformation, and maliciously calculated gossip that was evidently designed to financially damage Christian Media.

The Backstabbing Begins

ne week after the great exodus from the Christian Media Network, on January 24th, Bill Brumbaugh began the first of several very nebulous attacks that were very personal. These slanders were in his subscription e-mail internet newsletter. Each criticism was phrased in a very nebulous fashion with no actual details included.

These statements simply stated that there was some sort of unspecified "sin in the camp" at the network. In these attacks, Bill never really provided any actual information - only nebulous gossip that something was very wrong with James Lloyd. After he started these sleazy innuendos, it's clear that Bill received several responses from readers that wanted to know just what he was alluding to.

Bill simply responded with more innuendo and never detailed any accusation, nor provided any documentation of any kind. In one particular e-mail in which he communicated with one of our listeners, he wrote that if people really knew what was "...going on behind the scenes, you would be staggered by what you would find. I have ZERO confidence in righteous truth coming out of those whose lifestyles are in direct contrast to how our Father in heaven has laid out...." (5)

In that same correspondence, Bill did indicate that the "information" - whatever it was, was also in Steve Quayle's possession. He wrote that "the information that exists in Steve's hands is so shocking if he wished to retaliate, that James' ministry would shut down nearly overnight...This is not mentioning other grievances of substantial credibility of which I am in possession of." (6)

It was more than obvious in this correspondence that Mr. Brumbaugh was trying to give the impression that he had some kind of information would be damaging to our ministry, yet by insinuating that he didn't want to make that information public, he left the reader's imagination to run wild.

After reading these vague email newsletters, I got the distinct impression that Brumbaugh was awkwardly trying to say that if I were to try to collect the funds he owed the network, he would seek to damage my ministry through whatever "dirt" he supposedly possessed.

In that same email of January 24th, 2001 Bill Brumbaugh stated that "I am aware that MORE than enough compensation has been rendered for my broadcast time." (7)  We later heard from supporters of Christian Media that were told by Bill Brumbaugh that he was claiming that we had received a $1,000 donation that was supposed to pay for his airtime. This was apparently at least one of Bill's justifications for not paying the network for the shortwave time that he had already expended. I had no idea what "donation" he was referring to.

After having Bill Brumbaugh's seamy innuendos forwarded to me, on the air I publicly challenged Bill Brumbaugh to come forward with his accusations. "If you have damaging information, let's hear it" I said. I have nothing to hide. Indeed, hinting at some unstated sin is completely slanderous and thoroughly unbiblical. Bill was also challenged through more than one e-mail to 'put up or shut up' by Christian Media supporters.

During my broadcast response to Brumbaugh's nebulous slanders, I concluded that there was no reason to keep the truth about Brumbaugh's financial rip-off of the network private as he had initiated a conflict through his public slanders. In a broadcast on the subject, I categorically stated to the listeners that Bill Brumbaugh had ripped off the Christian Media Network for 8 weeks of shortwave time. No innuendo there at all - just a simple fact.

Less than a week later, on January 30th 2001, Bill Brumbaugh posted the following on his website: "The nature of division, derision and just abject nastiness that is flowing out of James Lloyd and CMN right now is starting to be of greater concern to myself, Steve Quayle, and others...." (9)  What I did not know at the time was that Chris Blodgett, from his vantage point inside the Christian Media ministry, had been "confiding" in Steve Quayle that we were completely carnal people that were secretly stealing donations earmarked for the hosts, and that multiple parties were smoking pot!

Without addressing the rather bizarre motive for such a scurrilous attack on the part of Chris Blodget (see the file on Blodgett on this site for details), unfortunately this was just what Bill Brumbaugh needed to justify yet another refusal to pay his obligations. Unfortunately, my friend Steve Quayle had also been infected with the slander, so with Blodgett on one side and Brumbaugh on the other, he was swayed in his perspective. Steve Quayle has since apologized on the air for allowing himself to be used in this fashion. He has also broken fellowship with Brumbaugh and Blodgett.

In the week after his email attacks on Christian Media, because Bill Brumbaugh had never really answered my public challenge with anything but more innuendo, he had apparently received so many e-mails that he then posted this evasive communiqué: "Okay folks, I guess I should not stand up for my friends and point out actions that I feel are incredibly apostate, as well as other issues that will now NEVER come to light." (13)  The truth is, I greatly desired to have those accusations to "come to light" so I could answer them.

As I've edited this essay on a couple of occasions and added to some years after it was originally written, I can now say that it actually took an entire year to force these liars into actually coming out in the open and stating their charges. For an entire year, all we heard was innuendo, or second hand accusations that couldn't be nailed down.

People used to be considered innocent until proven guilty. Once again, we couldn't get Bill Brumbaugh to actually publicly state any specific accusation. Even though there never was any credible evidence or documentation to back up any of these accusations (the whispers of drug abuse and theft), it took until December 2001 for Brumbaugh to openly state his charges -- an entire year. And even then, the supposed source of Brumbaugh's information was still withheld.

Two days after Brumbaugh's third mass emailing of complete innuendo, on Friday February 2nd 2001, I interacted with Steve Quayle with a lengthy 4 page e-mail reminding him of the recent events surrounding Genesis. By that time, we had lost our previously warm friendship and I was very hostile to Steve as I had not yet deduced that Chris Blodgett was secretly orchestrating the attacks from my own locale.

Steve Quayle's response to my written communication led me to believe that Steve was under the impression that someone at Christian Media was smoking illegal substances, so I was very curious as to why he would imply such a thing. Like many others in my generation, I smoked pot many years ago, but the Lord had long since delivered me from the bondage of substance abuse.

Furthermore, because we are focused on Christian ministry, anyone smoking pot at Christian Media would be considered completely out of line. At the time, I had no idea that Chris Blodgett who was then still working at the network, was willing to lie, steal, cheat, and do anything else necessary in a bizarre attempt at internally sabotaging the network so that he could pick up the pieces for himself.

Blodgett had also clashed with another network figure named Craig Portwood. The two hated each other, and I later learned that Portwood was indeed smoking pot. However, the accusations weren't aimed at Portwood, they were ultimately aimed at me.

At different times, both Portwood and Blodgett lived in a guest cabin at Christian Media's Southern Oregon mountain locale. During years of association with these individuals, I was to learn that just because people profess Christ, doesn't mean their lives will even begin to emulate His character. In retrospect, I've learned that my I was very naive as I had not yet realized the spiritual power that has been unleashed against our prophetic message.

As wild as that sounds, I invite the reader to examine the information contained in this cmediaresearch.com file on Chris Blodgett and Craig Portwood. At the time, if someone had told me that Chris Blodgett, who had me completely 'snowed' at that point, was actually intentionally spreading nasty and false rumours in an attempt to draw away Christian Media supporters to his own personal ministry, I would have called them a liar.

In retrospect, I now see that the entire assortment of individuals that ultimately allied themselves against this ministry were "before of old, ordained to this condemnation" (Jude 1:4). Indeed, we now see that the spiritual warfare that we experienced through what I dubbed the shortwave wars, was completely ordained by the Lord in order to manifest that those we thought of as brethren were not of the truth.

To this very day, the only person that has repented of what was done to us was Steve Quayle, and since that time, we have carefully sought to rebuild our formerly solid relationship.
