House Panel Wants Homeland Security Documents |
In the present instance, a House committee has asked the Homeland Security Department to provide documents about an agency policy the legislative branch has become aware of, in which many Freedom of Information Act requests, commonly called FOIA requests, are being illegally monitored. The Associated Press reported that for well over a year, Homeland Security has sidetracked hundreds of requests for federal records, and routed those requests to the desk of Homeland Security chief Janet Napolitano. The Freedom of Information Act of 1996, was a major breakthrough in citizen's rights, as the law compelled government agencies to respond to various written requests from citizens, concerning their practices, activities, and records. Predictably, under the guise of "national security," many responses to these requests have been significantly redacted, with the now well known image of pages of text blacked out rather commonplace. Now, however, the Homeland Security agency has been found to be monitoring citizen's requests for government data. This means that if you are researching a matter, or just interested in learning what records the government is maintaining on you, and you request those records, the Homeland Security agency is interested in you -- a process that is sure to have a chilling effect on civil liberties. Even though the null and void in our society continue to dismiss the tyrannical actions of a government gone mad, the bottom line is, if you choose to exercise your rights under the law to request documents from the government, while you're reviewing the documents, the American Gestapo will be reviewing you.
