Character Counts

The strong Christian morality of America, the bedrock upon which this nation originally stood, has eroded. America's declining moral character is causing a national crisis

James Madison, America's Founding Father known as 'the architect of the Constitution,' and our 4th President, declared, "We have staked the whole of our political institutions on the capacity of mankind to govern themselves according to the Ten Commandments of God." As we turn from God's law, the Ten Commandments, we find man's law and a growing police state filling in the void.

The 1st U.S. President, George Washington, was a man of unquestioned moral principles, character, and honesty. The 42nd President elected 200+ years later, Bill Clinton, in a poll taken of 58 noted historians, was unanimously voted the worst U.S. President concerning "moral authority." Worse yet, millions of "born again Christians" voted for Mr. Clinton, and supported him throughout his presidency. Even Billy Graham consorted with the Clintons, without reproving their vile actions, and the Congress and Senate also accepted the blatant immorality and lying manifested in the White House by failing to remove him from office during the impeachment hearings.

Should Christians accept lying and immorality because we are to love one another as Jesus loved us? God's Ten Commandments to his people declare, "Thou shalt not bear false witness." At Proverbs 6:19 we are warned of, "A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren." Yet many so-called Christians not only accepted the immorality of the 42nd President, they rebuked those who spoke up against the lying, cheating, immoral President because his "accusers" were not "forgiving" and "loving."

The truth is, a good and decent Christian nation would never accept lying and blatant immorality in any public office. A good and decent Congress and Senate should have removed Mr. Clinton from office to show the young people of this nation that this type of behavior is not acceptable.

Closer to home, James Lloyd and his Christian Media Network (CMN) has been the target of a vicious campaign of slanderous lies. These attacks have come from former CMN broadcasters and on-air pastors that have departed from the network. Others with a financial stake in a competitive radio network (The Genesis Communications Network) have been involved as well. James and his wife Susan have suffered well over 12 months of lies directed at their personal conduct and character, as well as the teachings of the network. Should James and his wife just "forgive" and "love" these attackers?

The Holy Scriptures tell us in Isaiah 59:2-4 that God's face is hidden from those whose "lips have spoken lies, [whose] tongue has muttered perverseness." Back in the previously cited Proverbs 6:16-19 we are taught that, "he that soweth discord among his brethren" is an abomination to God. It is one of the few things the Bible categorically states that God hates. With that Scripture for support, it would be wrong and UN-Christian to stand by and allow these types of attacks to continue.

Christian Media Network believes that Luke 17:3 applies in this matter:

"If thy brother trespass against thee, REBUKE HIM, and if he repent, forgive him."

The modern manifestation of the "rebuke" that has been issued has come in the form of several detailed radio broadcasts and thorough written examinations of the behavior of the relevant parties. In many cases, the individuals at Christian Media have been reviled by "Christians" that consider the Scriptural practice of reproof to be hateful and unscriptural. Thus, the process of manifesting whose child each person actually is has been the result.

We believe that this is episode is a powerful indicator of the spiritual malaise that has destroyed the integrity and moral fiber of our national institutions - and that includes the organized church. People calling themselves "Christians" are not only unable to discern the truth of the matter when presented with the documentation of who has done what, many have steadfastly refused to even examine the data.

A good example was found in a recent letter received by Christian Media when a reader demanded to be taken off the mailing list because she saw an advertisement for a book that critically examines the secretive political and financial activities of Billy Graham. "The minute you spoke against Billy Graham," she wrote, "I decided I never want to hear from you again."

This statement is, sadly, indicative of the Christian church today. The assumption that a popular figure could not possibly be implicated in anything unseemly protects the offenders from any scripturally based scrutiny. This runs counter to numerous Biblical imperatives and has caused the entire church to be placed in the unfortunate position where leaders whose character should be called into question can avoid any embarrassing inquiry - simply by claiming his opponents are being "judgmental."

    John wrote how the deceivers,

"... went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us, but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us." (I John 2:19)

John is speaking of a conflict that occurred between his former associates. They "went out from us" in order to follow their own program. He further states that this split was so that it would be "manifest" that they were not of the Apostolic truth. Thus, those that joined themselves to the former disciples of the Apostles in Jerusalem were also being brought to the point where they would also choose whom they would follow.

In other words, the conflict occurred so that God could cause people to "manifest" which spirit they truly are inhabited by - the spirit of error or the spirit of truth. Those that have joined themselves to the offenders and have reviled those that have told the truth will have no excuse, for the Lord has said "I will recompense them according to their deeds, and according to the works of their own hands" (Jeremiah 25:14).

A firm rebuke is in order for those that have spread lies and malicious and slanderous untruths about this ministry. This rebuke is not hatemongering, but the truth about the character and actions of those that have attacked this ministry. These "false accusers" and "despisers of those that are good" (2 Timothy 3:3) must be publicly exposed and the hidden things of darkness that they have secretly brought forth must be brought into the light. We hope that they will repent.

Although this world has taught us that character no longer counts and offensive behavior is only wrong if you get caught, the scriptures assure us that God sees all and He will "recompense tribulation to them that trouble you" (II Thessalonians 1:6).
